2025 Tax Return Deadline: April 15, 2026

For most calendar-year individual taxpayers, the federal deadline to file a 2025 return and pay tax due was Wednesday, April 15, 2026. A timely extension generally moved the filing deadline to October 15, but not the payment deadline.

Timeline

  1. 2026-01-26: The IRS began accepting and processing 2025 individual income-tax returns.
  2. 2026-04-15: General federal filing and payment deadline for calendar-year individual returns.
  3. 2026-10-15: General filing deadline for taxpayers who obtained a timely automatic extension.

For most individuals who use the calendar year, the federal deadline to file a 2025 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR was Wednesday, April 15, 2026. The IRS opened the filing season on January 26, 2026. The date refers to income and other tax information from tax year 2025 even though the return was prepared and filed during 2026. [1][2]

April 15 was also the general deadline to pay federal income tax still owed for 2025. Filing and paying are related but separate obligations. A taxpayer who could not finish the return could request an automatic six-month filing extension, generally by submitting Form 4868 by April 15, but the extension did not postpone payment of the estimated balance due. [2][3]

A timely automatic extension generally moved the filing deadline to October 15, 2026. Interest and possible penalties could accrue on unpaid tax after the original April deadline, even when the return itself was properly extended. The IRS advised taxpayers unable to pay in full to file on time, pay as much as possible and review official payment-plan or other tax-debt options. [2][3]

Some taxpayers had different dates. Publication 17 lists June 15, 2026, as the filing date for certain U.S. citizens and residents outside the United States, while explaining the relevant conditions and payment consequences. Members of the military serving in combat zones can receive additional time, and the IRS may postpone deadlines for people affected by specified federally declared disasters. [2][3]

State income-tax deadlines are set separately and can differ from the federal date. Business, estate, trust, payroll and information returns also follow their own calendars. Fiscal-year individuals generally use the fifteenth day of the fourth month after the close of the tax year rather than automatically applying the April date. [2][4]

For a paper return, IRS guidance treats a properly addressed and sufficiently stamped envelope as timely when it is postmarked and deposited in the mail by the due date. Electronic returns use the IRS e-file transmission rules. Taxpayers should retain proof of timely filing or mailing and use only an IRS-listed private delivery service when relying on that delivery method. [2][4]

Anyone checking a deadline after the fact should start with the IRS's tax-year 2025 instructions and online account, then check for a disaster-relief notice or other exception tied to the taxpayer's location and circumstances. A missed deadline should not be ignored: filing promptly can limit continuing failure-to-file charges, while paying what is possible can reduce interest and payment-related penalties. [2][3]
