Why Alcaraz Became the Youngest Man to Complete a Career Grand Slam

Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam when he won the 2026 Australian Open at age 22. He defeated Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the final on February 1. The trophy was the only major singles title missing from his record, after earlier victories at the US Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros. [1][2]
A career Grand Slam means winning each of tennis's four major singles championships at least once over a career. It is different from a calendar Grand Slam, which requires winning the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year. Alcaraz completed the career version by adding Melbourne to his existing set. [1][2]
The age record had lasted 88 years. Don Budge completed his set at Roland Garros in 1938 shortly before turning 23. Alcaraz was 22 years and 258 days old at the start of the 2026 Australian Open, several months younger than Budge had been, and also younger than Rafael Nadal when Nadal completed the feat in 2010. In the Open era, which began in 1968, Alcaraz became the sixth man to achieve the career Grand Slam, joining Rod Laver, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic. Counting the earlier history of men's tennis, the Australian Open described him as the ninth man to complete the set and the first to do so by winning his final missing major in Melbourne. [1][2]
The final strengthened the significance of the record. Djokovic had won all ten of his previous Australian Open finals and held 24 major singles titles. After losing the opening set, Alcaraz changed the match with stronger returning and sustained pressure, taking the next three sets in three hours and two minutes to claim his first Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. The victory gave Alcaraz seven major singles titles in only his twentieth Grand Slam appearance. The Australian Open reported that he had won seven of his first eight major finals and matched Bjorn Borg for the most men's major titles won before age 23 in the Open era. Those statistics are separate from the career Slam record but show the speed of his rise. [1]
Alcaraz's achievement is therefore a completeness record as well as an age record. He proved he could win on the hard courts of Melbourne and New York, the clay of Paris and the grass of Wimbledon before his twenty-third birthday. It does not mean he won all four in 2026, but it placed him among the small group of men with titles at every major. [1][2]
