How the Champions League League-Phase Format Works

The Champions League now ranks 36 clubs in one league table after eight matches against different opponents; the top eight advance directly, places 9–24 enter play-offs and the bottom 12 are eliminated.

Timeline

  1. League-phase draw: Each club receives eight different opponents drawn across four seeding pots, with four matches at home and four away.
  2. After eight matchdays: One overall table determines direct qualifiers, play-off teams and eliminations.
  3. Knockout phase: Two-legged play-offs produce the remaining round-of-16 teams, followed by the usual knockout rounds and a one-match final.

UEFA replaced the old Champions League group stage with a 36-club league phase beginning in 2024/25. All clubs appear in one standings table, but they do not play every other team. Each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents—four at home and four away—rather than facing three group opponents twice. [1][2][3]

For the draw, clubs are arranged in four seeding pots under the season's regulations. Each team is assigned two opponents from each pot, normally playing one at home and one away. Country and repeat-opponent restrictions also apply. Because every club receives a different schedule, the single table compares records earned against different sets of opponents rather than a round-robin slate. [2][3][4]

The league table uses the familiar match points: three for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. After eight matchdays, positions 1–8 advance directly to the round of 16. Clubs ranked 9–24 enter a two-legged knockout phase play-off for the other eight round-of-16 places. Teams in positions 25–36 are eliminated from the competition. [1][2][4]

Goal difference is the first separator when clubs finish level on points, followed by further criteria specified in the competition regulations. Those criteria can include goals scored and measures related to the strength or results of opponents, with later steps available if teams remain level. Fans should use UEFA's live table because the ordering can change as simultaneous final-matchday results alter several calculations. [1][4]

The play-off draw gives the higher league-phase finish a seeding advantage within paired ranking bands: clubs finishing 9–16 are seeded against teams placed 17–24, subject to UEFA's bracket rules. Winners advance to the round of 16, where the top-eight direct qualifiers enter. League-phase ranking can also affect bracket placement and home-leg advantages under the rules for a particular season. [2][4]

From the play-offs through the semi-finals, ties are generally played over two legs and decided by aggregate score, with extra time and penalties available when required under the regulations. The final is a single match at a predetermined venue. There is no drop into the Europa League for clubs eliminated from the Champions League league phase or its knockouts under this format. [2][4]

To follow the competition, separate three questions: the eight fixtures determine a club's league-phase points; the final ranking determines whether it goes directly through, enters a play-off or exits; and the knockout draw determines its route to the final. Consult the current season's official regulations for tie-break order, draw constraints and seeding details, because UEFA can amend those details while retaining the basic 36-team structure.
