GPT-5 Explained: What Changed at Its August 2025 Launch

OpenAI launched GPT-5 on August 7, 2025 as a routed ChatGPT system and a family of API reasoning models, adding new controls and replacing several earlier ChatGPT choices at the time.

Timeline

  1. August 7, 2025: OpenAI introduced GPT-5 in ChatGPT and released GPT-5 models for developers.
  2. At launch: GPT-5 became the default model for signed-in ChatGPT users, with tier-based usage limits.
  3. After launch: Newer OpenAI models arrived, making GPT-5's launch claims historical rather than a statement about the current default.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5 on August 7, 2025. In ChatGPT, the launch was presented as a unified system rather than one model that handled every request identically. The system combined a fast model for ordinary answers, a deeper reasoning model called GPT-5 thinking, and a router that selected between them according to the task, requested tools and user intent. [1]

At launch, GPT-5 became the default for signed-in ChatGPT users and replaced a menu that had included GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.5. OpenAI made it available across ChatGPT tiers, although usage limits varied. When some users reached their limit, the product could move them to a smaller model until the limit reset. [1]

The developer release used related but more specific product names. OpenAI offered gpt-5, gpt-5-mini and gpt-5-nano through the API. It described the main API model as the reasoning model behind the highest-performance ChatGPT configuration, while the non-reasoning ChatGPT model was exposed separately as gpt-5-chat-latest. That distinction matters when comparing API tests with the consumer product. [2]

Two API controls were notable. A verbosity setting let developers ask for low, medium or high detail, while reasoning effort gained a minimal option for cases where speed mattered more than extended reasoning. GPT-5 also supported custom tools that could receive plaintext instructions instead of requiring every tool call to fit a rigid JSON structure. [2]

OpenAI reported gains in coding, mathematics, visual understanding, health questions and instruction following, and it published benchmark results to support those claims. Those figures are vendor-reported launch measurements under particular test conditions. They help explain the product positioning, but they do not guarantee better performance on every prompt, language, workplace or independently designed evaluation. [1][2]

The word unified described the user experience and routing architecture, not a claim that every answer came from the same computation path. A simple request could receive a quick response, while a hard problem could trigger more reasoning. OpenAI also said users could explicitly ask the system to think more deeply, giving the router an additional signal about the desired response. [1]

GPT-5 should now be understood in its August 2025 context. Newer models and product defaults have since changed, so the launch page is a historical record rather than a current model-selection guide. Its lasting changes were the move toward automatic routing in ChatGPT, a family of differently sized API models, and developer controls over reasoning effort and answer detail. [1][2]
