SSI Maximum Payment for 2026: Individual and Couple Amounts

The maximum 2026 federal SSI payment is $994 a month for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse, before reductions and state supplements.

Timeline

  1. October 2025: Social Security announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026.
  2. January 2026: The new federal SSI maximums took effect.
  3. Throughout 2026: Actual payments depend on countable income, living arrangements and other eligibility factors.

The maximum federal Supplemental Security Income payment for 2026 is $994 per month for an eligible individual and $1,491 per month for an eligible individual with an eligible spouse. Social Security also lists $498 for an essential person, a narrower category involving someone who provides essential care under qualifying legacy rules. [1][2]

These are maximum federal amounts, not a promise that every recipient receives the full figure. Social Security subtracts countable income when calculating the payment. Earned income and unearned income are treated under different exclusions and formulas, and income belonging to a spouse or, for a child, a parent can sometimes affect eligibility and payment. [1][2]

Living arrangements can also reduce the federal amount. Social Security says a person living in someone else’s home who does not pay a fair share of food and shelter costs may receive a lower payment. Certain institutional living arrangements have separate payment limits. The headline $994 and $1,491 figures therefore work as upper federal standards before case-specific adjustments. [2]

Some states add an SSI supplement. A state supplement can make the total payment higher than the federal maximum, and administration differs by state. Conversely, receiving other countable income can make the actual federal payment lower. Comparing one recipient’s deposit with another’s is unreliable unless income, household status and state supplementation are also considered. [1][2]

The 2026 increase came from the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment that also applied to Social Security benefits. The agency calculates the new SSI standard by increasing the prior year’s unrounded annual amounts, dividing by 12 and rounding down to the next lower whole dollar. That produced increases from $967 to $994 for an individual and from $1,450 to $1,491 for a couple. [1]

SSI also has resource limits, which are different from monthly payment amounts. The 2026 fact sheet lists $2,000 in countable resources for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Not everything a person owns counts as a resource, so the limit cannot be applied correctly without reviewing Social Security’s exclusions and the facts of the case. [2]

For a specific payment, the recipient should use the benefit notice or My Social Security information and report changes in income or living arrangements as required. The official annual table answers the general question about the 2026 maximum. It does not replace an eligibility decision, calculate a state supplement or show what remains after other deductions from an individual payment. [1][2]
