Urgent vs Expedited U.S. Passport Service

Expedited U.S. passport service is a paid faster processing option currently listed at 2–3 weeks, excluding mailing time. Urgent travel service requires a confirmed appointment at a passport agency or center and proof of international travel within 14 calendar days, or a foreign-visa need within 28 days…

Expedited and urgent U.S. passport service are different routes. Expedited service is selected with an ordinary eligible application and an additional fee; the State Department currently lists 2–3 weeks of processing. Urgent travel service is handled by appointment at a passport agency or center for qualifying near-term international travel. Neither label promises delivery by a particular flight. Requirements, times and fees can change, so use the live pages on travel.state.gov when deciding. [1][2][4]

Processing time is not door-to-door time. The State Department says routine processing currently takes 4–6 weeks and expedited processing 2–3 weeks, measured while the application is at an agency or center. Mailing can take up to two weeks on the way in and another two weeks after issuance. Faster outbound mailing and paid 1–3 day return delivery for a passport book can shorten transit, but they do not shorten the government's review. Build the plan from total time, not the headline processing range. [1][4]

For urgent travel, passport agencies and centers serve customers by appointment when international travel is within 14 calendar days, or when a foreign visa is needed within 28 calendar days. Applicants must provide proof of travel, and appointment availability can be limited. An acceptance facility such as a post office or library is not the same as a passport agency. Do not walk in expecting urgent service, and do not buy nonrefundable travel merely because an appointment window exists. [2][3]

A life-or-death emergency has narrower rules. Official guidance covers travel abroad within two weeks because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying, is in hospice care or has a life-threatening illness or injury. It defines the qualifying family relationships and requires emergency documentation. Travel for the applicant's own medical services uses the ordinary urgent-travel appointment path instead. Read the official eligibility page before describing a situation as a life-or-death case. [2]

The appointment route also depends on whether an application is already pending. A person who has not applied uses the official online appointment process when eligible. Someone who already applied and whose plans became urgent should contact Passport Services with the application locator number rather than submit a duplicate application. The agency may alert the office handling the case or arrange an appointment if issuance before travel is otherwise impossible. Follow the individualized instructions and bring the confirmation. [3]

Prepare the correct form, citizenship evidence, photo identification, compliant passport photo, fees and printed proof of international travel required for the applicant's situation. Renewal eligibility, first-time applications and children use different forms and supporting documents. The October 2026 fee schedule lists a $60 expedite fee in addition to required application fees and a $26.87 optional 1–3 day return-delivery fee for an issued passport book within the United States; that delivery option does not apply to passport cards. [3][4]

Appointments themselves are free. The State Department warns that it is not affiliated with third-party appointment-booking services and may not honor appointments obtained through them. Do not pay someone to reserve a slot, share account codes or create duplicate appointments. Use only travel.state.gov links and official phone numbers. Commercial couriers cannot issue a passport or bypass State Department requirements, and fees paid to private couriers are separate from government fees and may not be refundable. [3][4]

Choose routine service when the full timeline has comfortable margin, expedited service when its processing plus mailing range fits, and urgent service only when the documented travel window and appointment rules apply. Check application status and respond immediately to requests for more information, which can extend processing. Keep travel proof and identity documents organized, but protect copies from unnecessary disclosure. The safest plan is early application; the urgent system is a limited appointment service for qualifying travel, not a guaranteed same-day passport program. [1][2][3][4]
